Canadian Murders
We all know that gruesome murder happens, but it's hard to imagine in taking place in our Country...Let alone our province.
Robert William Pickton is a notorious serial killer who before his arrest, resided on his pig farm in Port Coquitlam BC. Pickton- A.K.A "Willie" is serving the heaviest sentence possible for murder which began in 2007- a life sentence with no possibility for parole. A grand total of 49 women died by his actions starting in February 2002. By October that year, he held the title for the largest investigation of a serial killer. Just to make this even more disgusting, there is forensic proof that human remains were not only fed to his pigs, but also sold as pork to visitors on the farm. Heavy assault rifles, handcuffs and poisons were all found on Pickton's property. No entire bodies were found on the farm but human remains in a wood chipper was discovered as well as teeth and bones buried in the ground. A freezer of human body parts was also found.
Willie's initial charge was in 1997 for the raping and stabbing of a Canadian sex worker who he had in handcuffs. Unfortunately, this victim was deemed too unstable to testify against him due to drug dependency. It was discovered much later that she would have been the third of the 49 missing women, when she was originally thought to be the first.
I would classify this serial killer as the Mission-Oriented Type since his only targets were sex workers but considering he always hid his victims, never hid the weapons and raped every victim - he is considered to be a Hedonistic Lust Killer. This means the reason he did these horrible things is for sexual gratification and found not only the raping, but the torturing of these women arousing.
To put a stop to things such as this happening in Canada may be difficult, but ensuring these actions do not go on for so long won't be. This case especially went on for far too long before Pickton was arrested... 10 years. After reading about Pickton's Pig Farm, it seems like the case was not taken seriously immediately and that Robert's harsh consequence came far too late.
A different kind of killer- a mass murderer. Someone who unlike Pickton, has only one violet outburst resulting in killing many. Take Marc Lepine for example, taking the lives of 14 women at the University of Montreal before killing himself immediately after. His only targets were women that he claimed to be raging feminists. Unsurprisingly, Lapine's father who also had an extreme contempt for women and believed that a woman's only purpose is to serve men. He was both verbally and physically abusive towards his wife and children and banned any display of affection in his household.

Growing up, Marc was quite and generally separated from kids at school. He enjoyed making gadgets and liked working with his hands. After receiving less than stellar grades in university while still remaining polite and quite, he stopped attending classes and took a job in a kitchen. That was when his personality took a turn and began acting neurotic. Soon afterwords, he purchased a gun. On December 6, 1989, he walked into the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal and ordered all the men of in the room to leave with the promise he was fighting feminism. He then shot 9 women, killing 6. He moved across the school killing another 8 women and injuring a total of 14 people before shooting himself. In his suicide note, he blamed women for ruining his life and believed his actions were justified.
I would classify his mass murder as an act of revenge against women as his goal was to kill women as he blamed them for his unfulfilling life.
To put an end to these kinds of incidents would be even more difficult than ending serial killings as a serial killer leaves much more evidence of their actions and has a much more identifiable personality. To end mass murder in Canada, the first step may be addressing that the issue is beginning with how these people are raised and who is influencing them. A more obvious resolution would be increasing security everywhere such as metal detectors in entrances and having psych. evaluations before taking high stress jobs or entering university.
