Is school Violent?

School should be thought of being a place of safety. At any school, any form of violence is ''not tolerated" but although it is said not to be tolerated- that is absolutely not the case. Canadian statistics show that 10% of all illegal or violent occurrences in youth occur in a school setting. This includes bullying, verbal abuse, physical harm and drug possession. Although schools in more rural areas have a rate of crime that is much smaller, some inner city schools, have such a high rate of violent crime  that they have a metal detector at the entrance. So... to answer the question, school is dangerous. Students are in very high danger of sexual harassment, assault, drug use and then the seemingly frequent school shootings.

Interestingly enough, youth who have been victims of crime, are very likely to lash out among their peers and become the perpetrator due to bottled feelings of shame, guilt and pain. Another common character to cause violence at school is a young gang member (wow shocker). Hate crimes towards homosexuals, transgender people or anything similar is very common. An example of that is Marc Lapine, who shot 14 women at his Montreal college because of long suppressed feelings of a hatred towards females.

In school, students and teachers are at risk to members of that school or strangers and trespassers onto the school. The school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2014 is a tragic yet interesting story because the shooter was a grown man with no personal connection to this school. The 20 children who were shot and killed by Adam Lanza that day had no connection to him or his family and yet were the targets of his rage. So, that shows that even if you have no involvement to gang activity, drugs or bullying, school can be a place of extreme danger.

Crime in school is all to common. Although most illegal activity at school is cannabis possession, there are far to many instances of violent crimes at school all over the globe and something needs to be done so that everyone everywhere can feel completely safe at school.
